Sports facilities are enviable and include the Marine Lake at West Kirby for all manner of water sports,  a total of ten golf courses including the Royal Liverpool Golf Course at Hoylake, regular host of The Open Championship, and others at Caldy, Heswall, Leasowe, Arrowe Park and Wallasey to name a few, the Oval Sports Centre at Bebington for everything from swimming to skiing and Tranmere Rovers football team.

Shoppers are well catered for by the Pyramid Centre in Birkenhead and Croft Retail and Leisure Park at Bromborough as well as numerous town centre facilities across the region.

Schools on the Wirral are considered to be of an excellent standard overall and generally perform better than average at A’Level.  There is a mixture of state and independent comprehensive and grammar institutions (some single sex, some co-ed) including Birkenhead School, Calday Grange Grammar School, St Mary’s Catholic College, Wallasey, Birkenhead Sixth Form College and Wirral Metropolitan College.

Transport links include the M53 from Chester through the Wirral, two road and one rail tunnel to Liverpool City Centre and beyond, bus and train services throughout the area and beneath the Mersey and the Mersey Ferry as well as easy access to Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The sheer variety of the places to live and activities to enjoy on the Wirral mean that it is the ideal home for everyone from young families to young professionals, from busy executives to busy retirees.

The east of the peninsula, which includes two of the Wirral’s largest urban areas, namely Birkenhead (CH41, 42, 43 & 49) and Wallasey (CH44), as well as Bebington (CH62 & 63) and Bromborough (CH62 & 63), is perhaps most popular with young families, those employed locally and those commuting to Liverpool.  Housing is varied from smaller terraced properties in the town centres or close to the docks to larger homes further out.

Less urban in character, Oxton (CH42 & 43) and Prenton (CH43) are effectively suburbs of Birkenhead and as such have a more relaxed character.  Both have housing stock which is a legacy of their creation as a retreat for the gentry and includes fine early Victorian sandstone and brick built villas (some Grade II listed) and large detached villas, some dating from the Edwardian times and 1930s, protected by Conservation Area status. These attract the young professionals and wealthier commuters. Smaller terraced properties are found closer to Birkenhead, as well as some modern housing.

The west, which is much less densely populated, is perhaps most popular with retirees and high net worth individuals who choose the smaller towns and villages of Frankby (CH48), Greasby (CH49), Meols (CH47 & 48), Neston (CH64), Upton (CH49), Moreton (CH46) and Arrowe Park (CH49) on this side of the M53.  Good schools and outdoor activities also attract families looking for a better quality of life.

The exclusive village of Caldy (CH48) is known for its appeal to wealthy celebrities, including footballers while the ideal location of Heswall (CH60) (20 minutes drive to either Chester or Liverpool) and its wide, open spaces, makes it home to some the UK’s richest residents.  The seaside pleasures and views of West Kirby (CH48) and Hoylake (CH47) provide the perfect retreat for retirees of all ages!
